(More customer reviews)This is a review about a product, and about a product category. I'm going to start with the category - backpack vacuums.
Backpack vacuums are worn on the back, with a hose leading to the business end of the unit. Commercial cleaners use them all the time: in office buildings and homes. Why? Because they are more efficient! You can cover more ground in less time with less hassle. They are often more powerful than uprights and canisters because the air flow can be direct without rerouting around corners.
What's the tradeoff? You have to carry it. But, it's a lot easier to wear a 10 lb. backpack than it is to push or pull one on wheels on the floor. Far less wear and tear on the shoulder and arm because you only push or pull the wand. And, on stairs, it's a dream! My wife is 5'2" and 100 lbs, and she can carry it easily. In fact, our kids were carrying more to and from school when they were only 9 or 10.
Now, on to the Perfect PB1006. It's great!
First, the downside: the thing looks commercial. It's a grey plastic cylinder with a big logo nameplate. Nothing sleek or colorful. But, it's light, the shoulder and hip straps are padded and comfortable, and the thing sucks up dirt very quietly. Plugging the 50' cord around the middle of our two story house, I can vacuum every corner without moving the plug. My 17 year old son even said that it was fun!
The unit comes with a full set of attachments: rug, floor, upholstery, crevice, even one to vacuum from side to side across large carpets. It's easy to set up - push together the steel tube (nice double bend design) and attach a tool, push the hose into the unit, plug it in and turn it on. The switch is right on your hip (although I did turn it off by mistake a couple times before I got used to the location).
When you turn it on, you notice that even though the unit is right on your back, it makes no more noise than an upright or a canister. There is no significant vibration. And boy does it suck up dirt. The first time I used it, I noticed immediately that the corners of the room were cleaner, rugs were about the same even without a beater brush, and hard floors were much cleaner.
This is simply the best solution for vacuuming, even if you only do your home and cleaning is not your profession.
